White Male Teachers on Difference: Narratives of Contact and Tensions

This research reflection explores a narrative pattern that emerged in participants' interviews on student differences. This reflection reveals tensions between participants' structural and deficit understandings of student differences of race, class, culture, and language. Framing participants' understandings of structural and deficit thinking, this reflection articulates three discursive contexts relating to participants' work.

Gaining Research Access into the Lives of Muslim Girls: Researchers Negotiating Muslimness, Modesty, Inshallah, and Haram

This article explores the process of gaining research access into the lives of Muslim girls in the southwest USA. The authors discuss four emerging 'entry markers' that challenged the process of gaining and sustaining access over a period of 14 months. These included being Muslim enough, being modest enough, inshallah, and haram.

'After-Queer' Tendencies in Queer Research

In thinking through an 'after-queer', the authors identify and seek to account for particular habits of thought that are often associated with queer research in education and queer research about young people. The authors trace certain traditions that frame queer research and consider the proper subjects, aims, and locations of such research projects. The authors contend that these habits of thought require further interrogation because they are intrinsic to researchers' visions of their own research and to the constitution of fields of research in the broader research imagination.

After Dark in the Antipodes: Pedagogy, Place and Queer Phenomenology

This article pursues issues of pedagogy, place and queer phenomenology in the context of what might be meant by the term 'after-queer' or 'what falls outside queer' as we currently theorise, practice and locate queer. This article investigates how bodies become oriented within and around the field of a television series that centres Indigenous terms and orientations and thereby, still further, problematises the directions and orientations of desire. The article explores the narrative and queer and other couplings of an Australian tele-series.

'After-Queer': Subjunctive Pedagogies

This article offers a reading of the 2006 film The History Boys, which depicts eight male working-class grammar school students preparing for exams to enter Oxford and Cambridge and two teachers who prepare them. The author reads the film's subjunctive mood as connected to an analytic of 'after-queer' that complicates linear understandings of youth, sexuality, development, and education.

After Seattle: Social Science Research and Narrowly Tailored School Desegregation Plans

Social Isolation and Social Cohesion: The Effects of K–12 Neighborhood and School Segregation on Intergroup Orientations

This study examines the relationship between social cohesion and social isolation at the institutional level in schools and neighborhoods. The study uses data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Freshmen. Results suggest that social isolation in schools plays a more significant role than neighborhood isolation in diminishing social cohesion among young adults, although both matter.

Children of Immigrants and Educational Expectations: The Roles of School Composition

This article explores the effect that the proportion of children of immigrants in a school has on all students’ expectations and examines the differential effects of school composition on the expectations of children of immigrants as compared with nonimmigrants. This analysis demonstrates that comparative and normative theories of school effects are not accurate for children of immigrants, at least not to the same degree as they are for nonimmigrants.

Race and Academic Achievement in Racially Diverse High Schools: Opportunity and Stratification

This study examines the mathematics course-taking of White, African American, and Latino students in racially diverse schools and the effects of different opportunity structures in those schools on college preparation and college-going. This study uses data from the Adolescent Health and Academic Achievement Study (AHAA) and its partner study, the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Evidence consistently suggests that schools can play an active role in the provision of opportunities for social mobility or in the exacerbation of social inequality, depending on how they are structured.
