Examining the Impact of Pre-induction Social Networking on the Student Transition into Higher Education

This article discusses an empirical study of how online social networking can be utilised to support the initial student transition to university. An analysis of online activities showed some differences in the pattern of engagement between two contrasting departments, but information drawn from student questionnaires and focus groups, combined with tutor interviews, highlighted similar perceived benefits across both networks. By drawing on a wider cross-university questionnaire survey, eight factors which have been shown to be important in creating effective online social networking environments are discussed, including the need to maximize tutor involvement and provide quick responses to student queries.

Why Do Student Teachers Enrol for a Teaching Degree? A Study of Teacher Recruitment in Portugal and Sweden

This article reports on findings from an exploratory study carried out in Portugal and Sweden, concerning student teacher recruitment to Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes. It addresses issues such as the motivations and expectations of the student teachers regarding the teaching profession. The discussion comprises two themes: the frame of reference for ITE in the two countries and possible implications for the recruitment process. The findings reveal that female students seem to be attracted to the education field in both countries. What differs is how they enter the field. Another difference relates to when student teachers choose to enter a teaching degree.

Pre-service English teachers’ perceptions of newly arrived children from Mainland China

The study examined how a group of pre-service English language teachers perceived immigrant children from Mainland China in terms of learning attitudes, academic performance and classroom behaviour. The findings confirm the prevalence of the ‘deficit model’ in these pre-service teachers’ perceptions of immigrant children, which might negatively impact their professional practice. The participants widely perceived these children as deficit and consider them a serious professional challenge.

Making Connections in Practice: How Prospective Elementary Teachers Connect to Children’s Mathematical Thinking and Community Funds of Knowledge in Mathematics Instruction

This research examines the ways prospective elementary teachers (PSTs) made connections to children’s mathematical thinking and children’s community funds of knowledge in mathematics lesson plans. The authors identified three distinct levels of connections to children’s mathematical thinking and their community funds of knowledge evidenced in PSTs’ work. Findings describe how these connections reflected different points on a learning trajectory.

Preservice Teachers’ Attitudes and Beliefs Toward Student Diversity and Proposed Instructional Practices: A Sequential Design Study

This research draws on insights from achievement goal theory and multicultural education to examine the interrelated nature of preservice teachers’ biases and beliefs regarding culturally diverse students and the kind of instructional practices they are likely to pursue. The findings reveal that preservice teachers were significantly less biased and prejudiced and more likely to endorse adaptive instructional practices by the time they were ready to graduate from the teacher education program than they were during their 1st year in the program.

Changes in Secondary School Preservice Teachers’ Concerns About Teaching in New Zealand

This study explored how the initial concerns of preservice teachers changed over the course of a 1-year secondary school teacher training program in New Zealand. It also examined those concerns as they related to teaching efficacy and experiences on practicum. The findings reveal that students develop a more differentiated set of concerns about teaching as they gain classroom experience and their concerns become more realistic with that experience. The results also indicated that teaching efficacy and teaching concerns are not identical or interchangeable but instead have a reciprocal relationship. As teaching efficacy increased, concerns about teaching decreased.

Student Teachers’ Mathematics Attitudes, Authentic Investigations and Use of Metacognitive Tools

Based on findings from a semester-long study, this paper examines the development of Samoan prospective teachers’ mathematical understandings and mathematics attitudes when investigating authentic contexts and applying working mathematically processes, mental computations and problem-solving strategies to find solutions of problems. The authors were also interested in assessing the impact of using the innovative tools, mental computations and creative authentic investigations on PPTs attitudes towards mathematics. The findings reveal that both the positive and negative variations suggested that learning experiences in the FYMM course influenced general perceptions about mathematics learning and therefore, one’s actions when confronted with problems to solve.

Teacher Training and Pre-service Primary Teachers’ Self-Efficacy for Science Teaching

The present study focuses on the improvement of pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy for teaching science by including science courses within the teacher training program. The authors conclude that the science teaching self-efficacy of pre-service teachers, in particular, improved during years 1 and 2, and not during years 3 and 4. Higher levels of self-rated subject-matter knowledge and science teaching experience in primary schools both contributed to higher levels of personal self-efficacy for science teaching. Differences at the university level in courses taken during the first year between science content courses and science methods courses also influenced the pre-service teachers’ development of science teaching self-efficacy.

Learning How to Teach Chemistry with Technology: Pre-Service Teachers’ Experiences with Integrating Technology into Their Learning and Teaching

This article reports on Teaching Teachers for the Future (TTF) research, The Australian Government initiative. The research involve 28 preservice teachers undertaking a chemistry curriculum studies unit that adopted a technological focus. For chemistry teaching the results showed that technological knowledge augmented the fundamental pedagogical knowledge necessary for teaching chemistry content. All the pre-service teachers demonstrated an understanding of the role of technology in teaching and learning and reported an increased skill level in a variety of technologies, many they had not used previously.
