Student Training in Transversal Competences at the University of Cordoba

The current paper describes a research project developed at the University of Cordoba during the academic year 2007‑8. The participants in this research were 2414 students studying courses included in a pilot scheme for the implementation of European Credit Transfer System credits. The purpose of this paper was to ascertain the opinions of students in relation to their grasp and working level of the transversal competences encompassed in the Tuning Project.

Turkish Elementary Student Teachers’ Epistemological Beliefs and Moral Reasoning

The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationships between moral reasoning and epistemological beliefs in the context of educational research. The sample consisted of 96 elementary student teachers in Turkey. The findings of this study demonstrated that epistemological beliefs did not make a unique contribution to moral reasoning. The results also showed that while student teachers develop more sophisticated beliefs in some epistemological dimensions, they develop less sophisticated beliefs in other epistemological dimensions.

Stakeholders’ Perspectives of the Nature and Role of Assessment during Practicum

This article focuses on the assessment of student teachers during practicum. The study is contextualised in an Australian pre-service teacher education program in which practicum has been reconceptualised to help bridge the theory–practice gap commonly associated with “front-end loading” programs. The findings point to what participants perceive as disparate understandings between university and school staff about the nature and role of assessment.

High Efficacy and the Preservice Reading Teacher: A Comparative Study

The authors investigated the impact of tutoring and observing on preservice teachers’ reading self-efficacy and content knowledge. Participants reading efficacy and content knowledge were compared. Results showed that both groups reported growth in reading self-efficacy and content knowledge.

Teaching Ms. Kerbin: A Unique Approach to Student Teacher Reflections and Their Use With Preservice Candidates

In this article, three students teachers reflected and wrote about their student-teaching experiences. The group chose to examine common concerns of student teachers not often addressed in classes, with the idea that these reflections could be useful for teacher candidates just entering student teaching. These vignettes were presented to pre-student teaching candidates in the semester just before their student-teaching experience and at the end of the semester. The authors stated the value in grooming student teachers toward the habit of reflection to help them gain insights to their identities as teachers and to make the shift from self-absorbed novices to student-centered teachers.

The Six Remaining Facts: Social Studies Content Knowledge and Elementary Preservice Teachers

This study is examines how a critical-inquiry exercise in a social studies methods class transforms the content knowledge base related to a select group of historical figures for the preservice teachers. The findings reveal that preservice teachers have limited content knowledge bases. The author concludes that Preservice teachers must reach a level of critical consciousness before they can transform their social studies understandings and become transformative social studies educators.

Enhancing Teachers’ Counselling Skills: Student Teachers’ Views on a Teachers’ Education Programme

This study aimed to explore student teachers’ views regarding 1) the efficacy and the applicability of a brief teacher education programme in certain counselling skills; and 2) its impact on their competence to adequately apply a SEL intervention programme in their classrooms. The authors consider that the results of this study highlight the need for applying inservice training in counselling skills for teachers.

Exploring Preservice Teachers’ Metaphor Plotlines

Pre-service Teachers’ Goals and Future-Time Extension, Concerns, and Well-Being

A general theoretical frame on human actions was adapted to describe teacher’s teaching related goals, concerns and future-time extension, expanding previous studies only on of teachers concerns, or on their goals and concerns. Eighty-eight pre-service teachers participated in this study. Thirteen goal and fifteen concern categories were identified. It was found that goals and concerns were to some extent related to well-being.
