School as a Context for “Othering” Youth and Promoting Cultural Assets
Authors: Borrero Noah E., Yeh Christine J., Cruz Crivir I., Suda Jolene F.
The authors are interested in identifying and understanding community and indigenous strengths of “othered” youth as embedded in social and ecological systems. The authors used an ecological approach to dissect the experiences of “othered” youth through an investigation of their marginalization and assets. Multi-informant data with ten Native Hawaiian adolescents and five teachers and counselors of Native Hawaiian youth were used. The findings revealed five emergent themes: multiple identities, stereotypes, racism, coping strategies for racism, and cultural pride that highlight cultural assets and experiences with being the “other” at school.

Learning to Teach in the Figured World of Reform Mathematics: Negotiating New Models of Identity
Authors: Ma Jasmine Y., Singer-Gabella Marcy
In this article the authors analyze three episodes from an elementary mathematics teacher education class: two where students were positioned as children learning mathematics and a more extended one where students were positioned as teachers. The instructors presented the figured world of reform pedagogy in at least two ways over the course of the semester: by describing it and approximating it in class activities. The authors propose that by recognizing certain models of identity for children learning math, students in Mathematics for Elementary Teachers drew on corresponding models of identity for elementary mathematics teachers.

These three sets are the impact of the teacher education program on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and dispositions; the impact of the teacher’s knowledge, skills, and dispositions on her or his practice in the classroom; and the impact of the teacher’s practice on P–12 student learning.

However, their field experiences taught them that knowing how to teach the mandated curriculum and putting that knowledge into practice is a difficult task to undertake.

Generational Attitudes and Teacher ICT Use
Authors: Pegler Karen, Kollewyn Joan, Crichton Susan
This article investigates the impact of generational attitudes on teachers’ ICT use. Findings from the preliminary research suggest that when applications have a use or purpose that extends beyond the classroom and into their social or personal sphere, younger teachers demonstrate noticeable confidence and a higher potential for technology integration in contrast to their older colleagues. Notably, however, if the application is primarily work related, there seems to be no generational correlation in terms of user adoption.
