Special Education Teachers’ Use of Assistive Technology With Students Who Have Severe Disabilities

This study was conducted to identify factors that are predictive of integrating assistive technology into teaching practices among general and special education teachers of students with severe disabilities. It was found that out of seven independent variables, teacher preparedness was determined to be the primary significant predictor of student assistive technology use. Implications of the findings are discussed in light of the way in which teacher preparation can be enhanced to support teachers’ integration of assistive technology.

Innovative Uses of IT Applications in STEM Classrooms: A Preliminary Review of ITEST Teacher Professional Development

In this article, the authors were interested to examine how innovative information technology (IT) classroom applications are integrated into teacher professional development. The authors conducted an exploratory study of The National Science Foundation (NSF) -funded Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) projects. The authors found that these projects share practices not always found in STEM professional development, including the involvement of youth in the active learning process and an emphasis on STEM career connections with both teachers and students.

Learning about Urban Ecology Through the use of Visualization and Geospatial Technologies

In this article, the authors report on the successes and challenges of integrating their ITEST projects into one particular pre-service teacher education course designed for students from a range of disciplines and backgrounds. The authors found that as students’ understanding of the content improved, and their belief that they can use technology in their own teaching.

Making Sure What You See is What You Get: Digital Video Technology and the Preparation of Teachers of Elementary Science

The purpose of this paper is to identify the challenges and discuss the opportunities of incorporating digital video technology into the research on preservice science teacher education. The authors conclude that the incorporation of digital video technology and coding software packages into research focused on improving the quality of science teacher education provides a number of methodological advantages for researchers and numerous benefits for preservice education faculty and students. However, the use of digital video research methods can pose serious threats to the validity of any investigation. The article also discusses future directions for DVT applications.

Norwegian Secondary School Teachers and ICT

In this article, the authors examine to what extent ICT is being used by the teachers and how they are using ICT in their teaching. The authors also discuss how factors such as the subject being taught, teaching experience, gender and age influence the use of ICT in teaching.The findings revealed that teachers in the secondary schools in Hamar do use ICT but few use ICT very often. However, most are still unsure whether ICT will have any positive effect on the learning outcome for their students.

Elementary School Teachers’ Motivation toward Web-based Professional Development, and the Relationship with Internet Self-efficacy and Belief about Web-based Learning

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between teachers’ motivation toward web-based professional development, Internet self-efficacy, and beliefs about web-based learning. This study indicates that the teachers’ Internet self-efficacy and behavioral beliefs about web-based learning are significant predictors for their motivation toward web-based professional development.

A Life in Bits and Bytes: A Portrait of a College Student and Her Life With Digital Media

Policy, Technology, and Practice in Cyber Charter Schools: Framing the Issues

This article explores what current charter policies govern Cyber charter schools (CCSs). Furthermore, the paper outlines the practices in these schools that might illuminate future policy needs. The study shows how state leadership is vital to coordinate student enrollment across geographic boundaries, funding mechanisms, and conflicts between CCSs and established stakeholders. Finally, CCSs in this study serve unique, niche student populations that opt out of the traditional school system

The Impact of Immersive Virtual Reality on Educators’ Awareness of the Cognitive Experiences of Pupils with Dyslexia

The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of VR technology in enhancing the teacher’s knowledge and awareness of dyslexia, a phenomenon that is very difficult to explain. Eighty teachers of various subjects from a variety of schools in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area participated in this study. The research results clearly suggested that experiencing a variety of simulated types of dyslexia via virtual reality can bring about a greater improvement in teacher awareness of the dyslexic pupil’s cognitive experiences than is achieved by viewing a film about dyslexia.
