Improving Expository Writing Skills of Preservice Teachers in an Online Environment

The article describes an online expository writing experience designed to help preservice language arts teachers develop descriptive writing skills. The teachers were asked to describe a target picture within a picture, and their cohorts had to correctly identify the picture, and offer feedback. Teachers' descriptive skills were to improve over time.

Enhancing Case-Based Learning in Teacher Education Through Online Discussions: Structure and Facilitation

This multi-case study compares the experiences of students and instructors participating in three different online discussion formats used to support the collaborative and social aspects of case-based instruction. Results supported prior research findings that online chats and discussions provided opportunities for the students to share, discuss, and modify their case understanding and to support each other in using that knowledge to solve case and classroom problems. Practical implications for instructors using discussion groups in case-based instruction are provided.

The Sites Teachers Choose: A Gauge of Classroom Web Use

The article explores how the Internet is used in the classroom and if its use benefits students' understanding. 127 web sites reported by teachers were analyzed. From the data, most K-12 educators view the web either as a lesson planning tool, or a place for supplemental information. Most sites were not interactive.

Premature closure and guided reinvention: a case study in a web-based learning environment

The article examines an experimental web-based learning environment in which beginning teachers reproduce the assumptions with which they started out, rather than re-inspect them. Findings show the need for structural interventions within a priori hypothesized, linearly ordered, stages in reflection models.

Impact of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on Teachers’ Beliefs Regarding Technology Use

Although computers are now commonplace within our lives, integration within schools is much less ordinary. While access and training are no longer considered significant barriers, attention has turned to the potential influence of teachers’ beliefs. In response, problem-based learning (PBL) has been proposed as an effective approach for changing beliefs. This study investigated the impact of PBL on preservice teachers’ beliefs regarding technology use and on their intended teaching practices.

The Role of Teacher Questioning in Promoting Dialogic Literary Inquiry in Computer-Mediated Communication

This article reports research from an innovative university-secondary school partnership, the Web Pen Pals Project, which pairs preservice English teachers in online chat rooms with local middle school students to talk about young adult literature. Accommodating Individual Differences in the Design of Online Learning Environments: A Comparative Study

The purpose of this paper is to report the results of a comparative and descriptive study that examined the relationship and effects of incorporating students’ learning styles in the design of instruction and the outcome of students’ learning, including their attitude and satisfaction. The paper will first explain how the literature on learning styles was used to develop a list of assumptions about learning styles, and further how these assumptions were used to identify a learning style model.
