Research on globalization and education involves the study of intertwined worldwide discourses, processes, and institutions affecting local educational practices and policies. The four major theoretical perspectives concerning globalization and education are world culture, world systems, postcolonial, and culturalist. Critics of current global trends support educational alternatives that will preserve local languages and cultures, ensure progressive educational practices that will protect the poor against the rich, and protect the environment and human rights.

Pedagogical oversights: age and experience in New Zealand's teacher induction

The article describes a qualitative and quantitative studies regarding practicum in New Zealand. This research interprets data from a beginning teacher survey to examine school-level variation within the semi-structured national guidelines for induction programs. A discussion of survey design and distribution, pedagogical practices reported in New Zealand induction are reviewed. Interesting patterns surfaced regarding mid-year entrants and older beginning teachers in their second year of practicum studies.

Scottish student primary teachers' levels of mathematics competence and confidence for teaching mathematics: some implications for national qualifications and initial teacher education

The educational attainment of pupils influenced by teachers' competence is important in mathematics education. Eighty 80 BA student first year student completed an attitude survey as well an online mathematics competence test. They answered 28 randomly generated questions. Students were then asked to rank teacher attributes. Though 98% of the students ranked basic numeracy skills as the most important, 65% of the cohort did not possess these skills. Moreover 95% suggested confidence was important, but confidence levels were found to be low even among students with higher than minimum entry requirements to the undergraduate primary teaching program.

Learning through boundary-crossing: further education lecturers learning in both the university and workplace

This article reports on research on the deeper understanding that the universities contribute to professional learning of teachers. The claim was made is that the learning that takes place across the boundary of the workplace and university has the possibility of helping learners to resolve issues that the workplace alone does not provide them with the resources to resolve.

The appreciation and realisation of research-based teacher education: Finnish students' experiences of teacher education

The subjects of the Finnish research project that sought to describe student teacher's perspectives on research-based approach were part of a special group of students, worked as teachers without being officially qualified to do so before they entered teacher education. The research was carried out as a web-based survey (n = 113). The questionnaire was based on the structure of the curriculum of the teacher education programme, including items from each part of the curriculum. The subjects were asked about both attitudes and experiences. the students appreciate the research-based approach as the main organising theme of teacher education.
