Embracing inclusive teacher education

The article examines the influence of initial teacher education programs on the development of positive attitudes towards inclusion, equality in education and social justice. The article describes a research report commissioned by the Department of Education Northern Ireland which sought to identify existing practices that increased the motivation, participation and achievement of all pupils of school age with special educational needs.

Reconstructing Dominant Paradigms of Teacher Education: Possibilities for pedagogical transformation in Fiji

The article examines the variant educational models that are being implemented in Fiji. The author explores the historical factors that contributed to that educational approach. The study finds that despite the mechanistic practice and local culture of teacher education in Fiji, there are indications that point to future possibilities and hope, but that dominant techno-rational, and individual cultures of practice need to be developed by a socially localized program for teacher education.

Neo-liberal Subjectivities and the Limits of Social Change in University-Community Partnerships

The article examines an unsuccessful university-school collaboration project. The project which dealt with classroom behavior engaged researchers from the university and school sector in order to improve the management of behavior in classrooms. Despite the team's strong research background, strong collaborative base and mutual interest in devising new approaches to curb violence, the team was unable to progress.

Alternative teacher education in the Netherlands 2000-2005. A standards-based synthesis

The article reviews a synthesis of evaluation studies of alternative teacher certification programs that were introduced in the Netherlands between 2000 and 2005. The evaluation studies examined intake assessment, workplace learning, mentoring, and opportunities to qualify in all basic aspects of teaching. Findings raised concern about the alternative certification programs and offered some recommendations for change.

Dominant Discourses and Teacher Education: Current curriculum or curriculum remembered?

The article describes a school-based study of teacher education students in Tasmania, relating to the teaching of studies of society and environment (SOSE). The study suggests that teacher preparation programs should encourage greater critical reflection on curriculum documents, and findings highlight teachers' tensions between experimental and/or interdisciplinary approaches to teacher education. The study also explores the selection of fieldwork sites for children's learning and teacher education pedagogies.

Sustaining the Employment of Early Childhood Teachers in Long Day Care: A case for robust hope, critical imagination and critical action

Filipino Pre-service Education Students' Preconceptions of Teacher Roles Viewed through a Metaphorical Lens

A study of 125 teacher education students from the Philippines examined their ideas on what a teacher is, through metaphorical images constructed by the students. The images were listed, tallied, analyzed and categorized to explore meaningful patterns and themes. Results show preconceptions in knowledge source, direction-setter, character-formatter, change agent and learner.

This review chronicles the origins of the use of the term 'dispositions' in teacher education and highlights problems in its current definitions and applications, suggesting questions that need to be addressed in dealing with those problems and outlining necessary changes in teacher education programs to address development and assessment of the whole teacher.
