Translation processes in the design of an education for sustainable development innovations course for universities in Africa

The article describes the translation processes undertaken by the United Nations in its attempt to design an education program for sustainable development for universities in South Africa. The deliberative translation process is examined in terms of its influence on professional development and professional exchange opportunities for university teachers, which are non-traditional and responsive to diversity, history, context and risk. The article also draws on a model of Latour's actor-network theory to describe and explain the deliberative translation process in the UNEP ESD Innovations Course.

Teacher education as or for social and ecological transformation: place-based reflections on local and global participatory methods and collaborative practices

The article describes two social and ecological transformation teacher education projects in Canada. The projects utilized the 'critical place-based' transformative teacher education program agenda. International Network of Teacher Education Institutions: past, present and future

This article examines the history, activities and future interests of the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chair on Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability and the associated International Network (IN) of Teacher Education Institutions. In 1998, the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development work programme on education for sustainable development (ESD) requested UNESCO to develop guidelines for reorienting teacher training to address sustainability.

Autonomy or control: discussion of a central dilemma in developing a realistic teacher education in Norway

The article describes the introduction of a collaborative partnership model in initial teacher education at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The model has led the way for professional training closely related to the field of practice and meets the need for 'hands-on' oriented teacher education program. The author suggests that educational theory should precede autonomy in the teaching profession, and that only after acquiring educational theory should students be exposed to other teacher education fundamental issues such as control, an important element of the school system.

Finding new words: how I use critical literacy in my multicultural teacher education classroom

The article discussed a new approach to multicultural teacher education, after realizing the problems faced by white student teachers. The author illustrates a four step method, or levels of thinking, of her critical literacy approach, namely, description, analysis, vision, and strategy. She uses them to generate reflection in her students that: (1) cycles through the goals of deconstruction and reconstruction; and (2) promotes ongoing critical thinking as the main goal of her multicultural education class. She briefly explains how she uses these four steps to get her students actively to engage with two of multicultural education's key ideas, 'race' and 'whiteness', and, in this way, destabilize their perception of themselves as 'guilty' white people
